AMRITSAR: Last rites were performed for two Indian soldiers of 39 Garhwal Rifles mortal remains of whom were discovered during an excavation last year, with full military honours on Sunday in La Gourgue, France.Giving details, president of Paris-based Interfaith Association Iqbal Singh Bhatti said, "Bodies of two Indian soldiers, along with bodies of a British and a German soldier, were found buried in a field near the town of Laventie during digging of the area for civic purposes in September 2016. The most famous of the lot was Gabar Singh Negi, who won Victoria Cross for his bravery during the Battle of Neuve Chapelle in France, where he died on March 10, 1915. "Bhatti said the insignia of 39 Garhwal Rifles was found buried along with bodies, and a confirmation regarding this was received from the Mayor of Laventie.He said, after performing various tests, it was finally declared on October 10, 2017, that two of the four bodies discovered, belonged to soldiers of 39 Garhwal Rifles which was sent to France to fight in World War I.Bhatti said the site of the battle was less than 8km from Laventie, where the bodies of the two Indian soldiers were found.
