"The decision to invoke the sections has been taken after the commissioner of police Amitesh Kumar paid a visit to the slum areas in Mukundwadi and spoke to the residents. The decision was followed by couple of more directives by the city police, attracting gratitude from people, especially women from different areas in the city. Aurangabad: With the city police initiating action against liquor shops, the residents of Osmanpura area on Monday made a presentation to city police chief and demanded shutting down of liquor shops in their area. The residents cited that country liquor shops have become a source of nuisance and unrest in the area and threatened they would resort to agitation and hunger strike if the demand is not met by the district administration and police department. Not completely relying on district administration and state excise department in its fight against the liquor menace, the city police using its discretionary powers issued orders to a bar and country liquor shop to down their shutters for a period of 30 days in the first week of December 2016.Both liquor shops ordered to shut their shops are situated in the limits of Mukundwadi area that largely comprises slum and lower income group localities.Owners of the shop were served the orders under section 142 (2) of the Maharashtra Excise Manual, which reads, "If a riot or unlawful assembly is imminent or takes place it shall be lawful for any executive magistrate or police officer who is present to direct that such place shall be closed and kept closed for such period as he thinks fit.
