But the irony is that the authorities have blinded themselves to the violations and now new twists are being given from all quarters to obfuscate the entire issue .
Land grabbing is such a malaise that no law of the land seems to be able to put a stop to this practice . People do indulge in violations either out of need or greed but the law keepers chose to look the other way till the situation becomes septic in nature. So much so such perpetrators refuse to spare places intricately linked with religious virtue and faith .
The case in point is the much revered crematorium in the holy city Puri which is plagued by perfidious encroachments for years has now become a stormy debate in the State . Puri witnesses a kind of emotional unrest on the streets of the city demanding restoration of the crematorium for the Hindus all over, known as ‘Swargadwar ‘ .’ swarga’ means Heaven and ‘ ‘dwara’ means Gateway .
With all the civilized power in command, the encroachment of the crematorium has been going on since years, right under the nose of the authorities but not a hair wilted till the issue now boiling down to an administrative logjam and now a legal wrangling. The matter got worse when the news about relocation of the crematorium was in the media .
Notwithstanding the history of this crematorium in Puri, the general belief goes that Puri is the place where a person after death if cremated achieves salvation . It goes back to centuries when bodies were cremated when the temple of the lord was visible from here. However with urban expansion, increasing human habitation has bridged the entire gap .
But the rituals never stopped. In 1985 the local administration allotted 900 decimal of land to formally set up the crematorium and subsequently another 100 decimal was allotted for the required expansions to accommodate more number of pedestals for the pyres . But the malaise of encroachment did not spare this sacred place and the additional 100 decimal were used by encroachers to raise shops and other structures while the district administration, perhaps, either looked the other way or remained with blinkers on. And all violators constructed the illegal structures with the permission of the local municipality .
As sources point out, not that 100 decimal alone, even out of the principal 900 decimals allotted, a huge area has been encroached to build small hotels, lodgings and other small commercial outlets which go on wrecking mullahs . When the mess came into light the administration lofted the idea of relocation of the crematorium . But when local people stood up protesting the proposal about relocation the distric administration suddenly rediscovered virtue in the existing Swargadwara and gave the statement that the administration will not tolerate any violation and clear the encroachments with an iron hand to restore the sanctity of the crematorium come-what-may.
So a notice some time back was slapped by the DM Puri on the Puri Municipality to explain its position on the violations allegedly done by the latter’s permission and why action should not be taken against any erring authority . But will it be possible on the part of the administration to demolish the illegal structures in whatever shape and to whomever they belong to or , ultimately the matter yet again shall be shelved in the legal sanctuaries .
