Chandigarh: Injured in fireworks, 116 admitted to different city hospitals

As many as 21 burn injury patients and six with eye injuries were admitted to the civil hospitals. A 7-year-old boy, Tanu, from Derabassi was referred to the PGIMER, Chandigarh. As per the data, GMSH received 28 burn injury patients and 14 with eye injuries, while GMCH received six patients with burns and three with eye injuries. In Derabassi and Zirakpur, total seven cases of burn injuries were reported during the Diwali celebrations.

A list of Chandigarh health department revealed that Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) received 38 patients, while 78 people were admitted to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, Government Multi Specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, and civil hospitals at Sector 22, Manimajra and Sector 45. Most of the victims were bystanders, said Professor M R Dogra, Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at PGIMER in Chandigarh on Thursday. Dr Parul Chawla Gupta, Assistant Professor of the Department Ophthalmology, said that a special Out-patient Department for Diwali-related injuries at the Advanced Eye Centre was opened on November 6 from 8 am that would continue to function till 8 am on November 9. As per the data, among the injured, 26 were men and rest women, including 15 children less than 16 years of age. The hospital officials said the youngest among the injured is a two-year-old. The PGI received one case a day before Diwali. As per the PGIMER officials, 14 patients were bursting crackers when they got injured and 20 were bystanders. A total of 12 patients required surgical intervention with eight having severe injuries. Professor Dogra said that unregulated burning of firecrackers should be banned. “If we can ban other things, which hurt or injure humans, why not unregularised bursting of crackers. The firecrackers on Diwali can be burst at one place by some professionals,” advised Professor Dogra. “We have received 20 patients who were either passing by or just standing nearby where the firecrackers were being burst,” added Professor Dogra. As per the data, GMSH received 28 burn injury patients and 14 with eye injuries, while GMCH received six patients with burns and three with eye injuries.
