24-year-old falls to death after gambling raid in Hallomajra

CHANDIGARH: A 24-year-old man died after falling from the second floor of a house in Hallomajra village on Wednesday when police reached there to check gambling Police said they had got information that some people were gambling in the house and Rohit Kumar fell from the roof in a bid to escape. Relatives filed a complaint against constables Ajay and Manjit and demanded murder FIR.Jyoti Kumar said Rohit was not playing, but only watching the game. Rohit, a native of Bihar, worked in a private company at Jammu and Kashmir and had come to the house of his uncle, Sikander, in Hallomajra to celebrate Diwali. He was sitting at a neighbour’s house, number 256, where others were playing cards around 2pm. People dialled 100 and rushed him to GMCH-32 in a private vehicle.

Relatives of Rohit, however, alleged that he fell when cops allegedly manhandled him and pushed him from the roof.Angry residents and relatives protested outside Sector 31 police station and demanded registration of a murder case against cops who raided the house. Police have kept his body at GMCH-32 for the post-mortem, which would be conducted after the arrival of his parents.Residents alleged that the house where people were allegedly gambling was owned by a retired UT police inspector and he had let it. Rohit, a native of Bihar, worked in a private company at Jammu and Kashmir and had come to the house of his uncle, Sikander, in Hallomajra to celebrate Diwali. He was sitting at a neighbour’s house, number 256, where others were playing cards around 2pm. Two constables, Ajay and Manjit, posted at Sector 31 police station, raided the house to nab the gamblers and people started running from there, said Jyoti Kumar, another uncle of Rohit.Gambling raid: Kin seek murder FIR against copsJyoti Kumar said eyewitnesses told him that both the constables allegedly started snatching money from those in the houses and manhandled Rohit, who fell during the scuffle.Some eyewitnesses alleged that when Rohit fell from the roof, both the cops fled. People dialled 100 and rushed him to GMCH-32 in a private vehicle. Doctors declared him brought dead.PCR reached the spot and cops were inquiring about the incident when a message flashed on their wireless set about Rohit’s death.Residents heard the message and got agitated and started pelting the PCR van with stones.Angry relatives of Rohit and Hallomajra residents gathered outside Sector 31 police station and raised slogans against cops. Relatives filed a complaint against constables Ajay and Manjit and demanded murder FIR.Jyoti Kumar said Rohit was not playing, but only watching the game. He had come to the city on Tuesday and stayed at Sikander’s house.UT SSP Nilambari Vijay Jagdale said a DDR has been filed and an inquiry has been marked to ASP (south division) Niharika Bhatt. After the probe, guilty would be punished, she added.
