The ban stand for usage, storage, manufacturing, distribution, recycling of polythene bags and material made of thermocol such as disposable plates, glasses, cups and spoons. MC has also adopted the notification issued by the Punjab government after which raids will be conducted to curb violators.Till date, polythene bags are being used with impunity in Mohali , especially in Kisan Mandis and colonies falling under the MC limit. Reports have also been submitted with the civic body authorities regarding stray cattle consuming polythene littered in parks and roadside garbage dumps.MC commissioner Bhupinder Pal Singh said, “The notification has been issued by the Punjab government and Mohali MC has adopted it. Now, we will carry out drives to penalise those found violating the ban. It is also mandatory for the Swachh Survekshan survey to keep the city clean and polythene free.”As the second phase of Swachh Survekshan is approaching, the Mohali municipal corporation will focus on the removal of polythene littered and building material debris dumps in the city. MC has been making efforts to improve upon the national ranking in the Swachh Survekshan. Last year, Mohali was ranked at 121 in the survey conducted under Swachh Survekshan 2017 by the central government.Mohali scored a total of 1,193 points out of 2000 (59.65%) after evaluation of various components. The major component municipal self declaration carrying 45% of 2000 the total marks, included components like solid waste collection and transport, solid waste processing and disposal, open defecation free, capacity building efforts and awareness campaigns and behaviour change, where the MC scored 478 out of 900 points, which computes to be 53%.However, the residents of Mohali feel that the chronic garbage dumps in the rural area perhaps must have brought down the ranking. Earlier, mayor Kulwant Singh had also pulled up cleaning and sweeping officials outsourced to clean the city for not removing the polythene litter. But till date the company failed to remove the litter.Mayor said he visited the park in Sector 71 where polythene waste was littered, and the same condition was also visible at other sectors like Sector 70, Industrial Area Phase 8B, Phase 1, X, XI for which the company has been directed to clean the mess.
