Major reservoirs in south India have only 16% of their total storage capacity

The total live storage capacity of these 31 reservoirs is 51.59 BCM.According to an official statement, the total live storage available in these reservoirs is 8.00 BCM -- which is 16% of total live storage capacity of these reservoirs -- as on March 23. "The storage during the corresponding period of last year was 18%, and average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period was 29% of live storage capacity of these reservoirs. CHENNAI: The collective storage levels in major reservoirs in the southern states -- Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala -- is just 16% of their total storage capacity.The Central Water Commission (CWC) monitors 31 reservoirs in these states. Storage during the current year is less than the corresponding period of last year and is also less than the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period," the statement said.Except for Telangana, the four other southern states have lesser storage than that in the corresponding period last year.
