Coimbatore: The rural police have arrested a 39-year-old woman, who beat her 45-year-old husband to death using a cricket bat, after he attacked their seven-year-old son at their residence near Malumichampatty on the outskirts of the city on Tuesday.The accused, G Umadevi, a native of Valparai, was working as a lab assistant at a private hospital, police sources said. “She had married M Gnanam, a driver, 18 years ago. Gnanam was addicted to alcohol and used to pick up quarrels with his wife that often turned violent. During such a quarrel on Tuesday, the drunk man beat up Umadevi and began to attack his son, who was sleeping. After her attempts to stop her husband failed, Umadevi picked up her son’s cricket bat that was laying nearby and attacked Gnanam till he collapsed,” a police officer said.Though she realised that the man was dead, Umadevi rushed him to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), the officer said. She told doctors that her husband suffered head injuries following a fall. But the doctors grew suspicious seeing a deep cut on the back of his head, his swollen right cheek and bruise on left eye. Umadevi confessed to the crime when the doctors confronted her.Chettipalayam police have filed a case under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Further investigation is on.
