A Coimbatore Corporation lorry is getting filled with water to supply to residents who face severe shortage. | Photo Credit: S_SIVA SARAVANAN more-in Following its decision to supply drinking water to affected areas through lorries, Coimbatore Corporation’s water managers have been getting calls from residents across the city. An engineer the Corporation has tasked with managing water supply through lorries says that he has got around 200 calls in the last few days alone. The Corporation fills the lorries with water from tanks in Ganapathy, Bharathi Park, Varadharajapuram, on Saradha Mill Road, Mettur, Puliakulam and a few other areas. Each of the places has two or three lorries that make 10 to 15 trips a day depending on the demand. Most of the areas where the Corporation sends lorries are those that do not have piped water supply. Among those are also slums, the water managers say. The Corporation has deployed its lorries and has also hired lorries on contract. A lorry can take around 9,000 litres a trip. Private tankers With water supply coming to just once in 10 or 12 days in many parts of the city, the demand for water by private tankers has increased. More than a dozen companies supply water in tankers in the city and nearby areas. The demand is more in areas such as Ukkadam or Raja Street where there are more number of independent houses. The apartments have borewells and are hence, able to manage. In the last few days, calls for water supply by tankers in a day has almost doubled, says one of the suppliers. “We are unable to meet the demand. If there is a call in the morning, we are able to supply only in the evening,” he says. Though the requirement is up, most of the suppliers give priority to their regular customers. “Many ask for 1000 litres supply. If it is 2000 or 3500 litres, it is easier to supply. We meet the needs of the regular customers and then supply to others,” says another supplier. Some of these tanker suppliers take water from private borewells and some others have RO plants. The demand is met from the nearest water source, says the supplier.
