Idle timers a cause of concern for motorists

With some of the timers not showing the actual time remaining for the green signal, motorists are not able to keep their vehicle on idle mode. Apart from the non-functional green corridor system, defunct timers of signals add to the inconvenience of motorists. Timers will also be off if the waiting time for the green signal at a junction is less than 30 seconds. Timers of traffic signals on Dr. Nanjappa Road and Mettupalayam Road also face the problem. City police is maintaining signals at 57 traffic signals in the city.

more-in When the city police introduced green corridor system on 11.5 km stretch between Uppippalayam and airport junction in 2012, motorists were able to save 16 to 27 minutes by passing the 13 signals at an average speed of 45 kmph. Apart from the non-functional green corridor system, defunct timers of signals add to the inconvenience of motorists. With some of the timers not showing the actual time remaining for the green signal, motorists are not able to keep their vehicle on idle mode. It also adds to the worries of motorists at a time when fuel prices are escalating at frequent intervals. Regular commuters say that timers with at least four signals each on arterial stretches, Avinashi Road and Tiruchi Road, are not functioning during the day. At times, motorists are also seen jumping signal as police are not posted to manually control the traffic. Timers of traffic signals on Dr. Nanjappa Road and Mettupalayam Road also face the problem. Muhammad Salam, an employee with a restaurant near railway station, said that timers need to be restored at every junctions to avoid jumping signal. Timers help motorists of approaching vehicles to decide on whether they could cross before the green turns red or else they should slow down and stop. According to him, he had a narrow escape as a two-wheeler jumped signal when he was crossing a signal on Avinashi Road recently. Traffic police said that timers with all the signals in the west region are operational. They said that a few ones in the east region are not functioning. City police is maintaining signals at 57 traffic signals in the city. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) S. Saravanan said that the few timers that are defunct will be repaired soon. “Some of the timers are on idle mode as police manually control the traffic during non peak hours. Timers will also be off if the waiting time for the green signal at a junction is less than 30 seconds. We ensure that timers are functioning when the waiting time is 90 seconds and above,” said Mr. Saravanan.
