Keen contest on cards on Dehradun Cantt, Rajpur Road seats

Dehradun: With over two lakh voters, Dehradun Cantonment and Rajpur Road constituencies will witness a keen contest between the Congress and BJP candidates. Senior BJP leader and seven-time MLA Harbans Kapoor was again given the ticket from Dehradun Cantonment while Khazan Das will fight from Rajpur Road seat. Apart from this, we have also tried to ensure better facilities in government schools-- like furniture and toilets.”Unlike Dehradun Cantonment, people of Rajpur Road constituency have been shifting their loyalties regularly. On Sunday evening, the BJP announced its candidates for both the seats of Dehradun district. Some say that Kapoor has developed the region while the others beg to differ.

On Sunday evening, the BJP announced its candidates for both the seats of Dehradun district. Senior BJP leader and seven-time MLA Harbans Kapoor was again given the ticket from Dehradun Cantonment while Khazan Das will fight from Rajpur Road seat. Congress is yet to announce its candidates on the two seats.Dehradun Cantonment is a stronghold of the BJP and the party’s senior leader and former cabinet minister Harbans Kapoor holds sway over the Punjbai people, who form a big chunk the constituency’s population.The three-time MLA from Dehradun Cantonment, Kapoor will again be defending his seat this time.People of the constituency have a mixed reaction about their MLA. Some say that Kapoor has developed the region while the others beg to differ. Dehradun Cantonment has 1,24,248 registered voters which are divided in 17 wards like GMS Road, Garhi Cantonment and others.Giving details about his work, 70-year-old Kapoor said: “The most important work that we have done is the laying of new sewer lines which was the need of the hour. Apart from this, we have also tried to ensure better facilities in government schools-- like furniture and toilets.”Unlike Dehradun Cantonment, people of Rajpur Road constituency have been shifting their loyalties regularly. Congress leader Rajkumar is the sitting MLA from the seat.Rajpur Road has 11,7464 registered voters and the constituency is divided in 19 wards.People here also have different opinions about their legislator.Ritesh Jain, a resident of Race Course-- a part of Rajpur Road-- said, “Lot of development work has been done in various areas, but there are things which need to be looked seriously. One of the most important one is reducing the traffic load, which can be done either by widening the roads or by construction of flyovers. The increasing population demands that such measures be planned for the coming years.”Speaking about the work done in his area, Rajkumar told TOI: “We have completed several projects in the last five years, like construction of new overhead tanks, covering of drains and renovating the high-tension wires which were running low over residential colonies. We are also working on regularisation of the slum colonies and if elected again, I plan to pursue this matter further.”Shiv Mehta, a resident of Rajinder Nagar, said: “The sitting MLA has done a good job like construction of community halls in many localities and also renovation of the parks.”
