Dehradun: If you are planning to buy alcoholic beverages on the way to your holiday destination, you may be left disappointed as Uttarakhand government has decided to shift liquor shops from the highways. About 962 people lost their lives in road accidents in the state in 2016, while 1,736 got injured.“The government has taken an in-principle decision to shift 403 wine shops located on national and state highways. Complying with the Supreme Court order, the government will soon relocate 403 such outlets operating within 500 metres from national and state highways by April 1.The move is aimed to reduce road accidents caused by drunk-driving. The decision will be implemented in true letter and spirit,” said Pant. The onus of relocating the shops would be on the liquor license holders and district administration will act as a facilitator,” said excise commissioner Jugal Kishore Pant. The Supreme Court had ordered all the state governments in December 2016 to “cease and desist” from issuing excise licenses to liquor shops along highways and also remove signages or boards indicating their location within a 500-metre range of a highway.Significantly, there are around 526 liquor shops in Uttarakhand and majority of them are abutting or along the highways passing through the hill state.“In case of any law and order issue on shifting the liquor shops, police help will be taken.
