New Delhi: "During this tense situation I told my men to perform their duties with a smile on their faces," said CISF DG Rajesh Ranjan. Around 5,000 CISF personnel were deployed at the airport to ensure the safety of passengers during COVID-19 outbreak. "The most important part was that we all stand united at the airport to fight COVID-19 and the passengers were also largely cooperative," said Srikant Kishore, DIG, CISF. CISF personnel and their families were briefed about precautions to be taken for their safety. "From the very first day, we procured sanitisers and masks for our personnel," another official said. During the period, most of the passengers had queries related to the checking process. "We were focusing on passenger preparation and social distancing. We continuously told them that they should not keep anything inside their pockets and maintain distance from each other," he added. When there was no case in India, CISF with the help of doctors started briefing our personnel about COVID-19. "They were told to maintain personal hygiene including regular cleaning of their uniform," another officer said. "They went beyond their mandate to help other stakeholders at the airport. They wore a lot of hats during this period," the CISF DG said. Indo-Tibetan Border Police The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) had built a quarantine centre at its Chhawla Camp on January 28, which helped 1,023 people evacuated from Wuhan, Italy and a group of Italian tourists. As ordered by the Government of India, DG ITBP had identified the Chhawla facility for quarantine centre which was then conceptualised on an urgent requirement of the Government. A special team of administration and logistics was constituted to deal with resources required in setting up and functioning of this quarantine centre. 24x7 services of medical teams were always ensured at the centre and disciplined daily routine was followed for the evacuees. "Successful quarantine was ensured for 43 foreign nationals, including people from seven friendly nations like Bangladesh, China, Myanmar, Maldives, US, South Africa and Madagascar," ITBP Pro Vivek Pandey said. "We have to launch a united assault on Covid-19. Our Himveers (ITBP personnel) are making brave and selfless contribution in this tough situation," said SS Deswal, DG ITBP. Railway Protection Forces Meanwhile, the RPF had to secure the railways, one of the most crowded modes of public transport. Arun Kumar, DG RPF told the Millennium Post that when they started getting complaints of positive cases travelling by trains, they traced them and back-traced all passengers and staff who travelled with these suspects. Local authorities were told to put them in quarantine. RPF has also provided their barrack in Tughlaqabad for qurantine centre. After passengers trains were stopped, RPF now ensuring that essential commodities which are being carried inside goods trains reaches safely to destination. "We have asked our staff to maintain social distancing and make sure that the barracks where they have been kept are fumigated," an official said.
