Ramjas protests: Cops call for strict action, VC advocates moderation

NEW DELHI: A day after clashes broke out between All India Students Association (AISA) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) students at the Delhi University 's Ramjas college, the Delhi Police on Thursday called for strict action, while asserting that few policemen's unprofessional actions were also noticed in handling law and order situation during the scuffle."In North Campus, few policemen's unprofessional actions noticed. Enquiry on, strict action will be taken. The situation is being monitored," Joint Commissioner of Police Deependra Pathak said.Pathak also bid students to remain peaceful during any protests in the future.Meanwhile, AISA students staged protest against the Delhi Police and the ABVP outside police headquarters."I urge the students to keep their cool and help maintain the university's peaceful atmosphere. It is my appeal to those who consider themselves political cadres, that they should maintain the dignity of educational institutions," Vice Chancellor of Delhi University Yogesh Tyagi told TOI.When asked whether the authorities were going soft on the ABVP, Tyagi replied, "It is not a question of 'soft' or 'hard'. All students are important to us. Nobody is the enemy here. Sab apne hai."Brushing aside the query about setting up an enquiry into the incident, Tyagi said the proctor's office would deal with the students' concerns.Delhi Police on Wednesday registered an FIR under sections of rioting and assault against unknown persons, in connection with violent clashes that broke out between two student groups outside Ramjas college.The clash was triggered between RSS-backed ABVP and Left-backed AISA student wings over an invitation to JNU student Umar Khalid , who is facing sedition charges, to speak at a literary seminar titled "Cultures of Protest."At least 30 people, including a professor and 10 policemen, were injured and several media persons were thrashed in the midst of the protests.
