more-in A 21-year-old woman died due to pregnancy-related complications in north-west Delhi’s Aman Vihar on March 24 after she was allegedly tortured by her in-laws for dowry. The victim, who was eight months’ pregnant, was declared brought dead at Ardent Ganpati Hospital. Her family alleged that she lost her life because she was constantly ill-treated by her husband Ashok (27) and his family for not getting dowry at the time of the wedding. Facing taunts “They used to taunt her for not getting a bike or money. She wasn’t allowed to keep a phone or talk to us. They also didn’t allow her to step out and used to lock her inside whenever they went out,” said Sunita, the victim’s sister-in-law. The family also alleged that she was tortured by her in-laws because she was carrying a baby girl. “They wanted a boy. However, when the sonography revealed that she was carrying a girl, they stopped taking care of her,” said Sunita. She further said that Ashok had hidden the fact that he had been married twice before. “In the one year of her marriage, we only met her thrice, the last being on Holi,” she said. Allegations denied Ashok, however, denied the allegations. “I have call records showing that she used to talk to her family. Her niece used to visit her. We never asked for dowry because we knew her family wasn’t financially sound,” he told The Hindu. The police, meanwhile, haven’t arrested the husband or his family members. “The FIR was filed on Sunday. Prima facie, the woman died due to pregnancy complications. There were no injuries on the body,” said a senior police officer.
