The party used the event to field questions from the crowd and present its plan for the municipal corporations. In the run-up to the April 23 elections, the Delhi Congress has planned a series of events — both online and offline — as part of its ‘Dilli ki baat, dil ke saath’ initiative. After an online chat on March 24, a public meeting followed near the Nale ki Chaat shop in Bharat Nagar on Monday — the first of a series of such events. Addressing the crowd, Delhi Congress president Ajay Maken said that the party, which has been in the Opposition since 2007, would focus on improving the functioning of the municipal corporations instead of giving excuses. Outline party’s plan Many of the questions posed to Mr. Maken were about sanitation services provided by the corporations. Referring to the multiple strikes by sanitation workers in the past two years over late salaries, he said that the municipal staff had been neglected by both the BJP and the AAP. He said that the Congress would give permanent jobs to 10,000 temporary sanitation workers. Reiterating the party’s plan to improve solid waste management, which was officially released on Sunday, Mr. Maken said that Delhi would be made “landfill-free” by reducing unsegregated and unprocessed garbage. Wards that did well on their solid waste management initiatives would be given incentives when it came to property tax, said Mr. Maken. While the Congress had not announced its candidates for the polls as of Monday evening, the party was preparing to ramp up its campaign across the Capital. Public meetings like the one on Monday would be held at other popular eating joints and weekly markets too.
