IIT-Delhi student attempts suicide

A first-year Engineering Physics student at the Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi (IIT-D) allegedly attempted suicide by jumping from the fourth floor of his hostel building in New Delhi on Wednesday. According to Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Chinmoy Biswal, Mr. Purthi jumped from fourth floor of Vindyachal hostel and has suffered fractures in legs. His reluctance to take up engineering and his struggle to cope after being enrolled has forced student Nitish Kumar Purthi to take the extreme step, the police said. And when he went to call the security guard to help him take Nitish down, the latter climbed up to fourth floor and jumped,” Mr. Biswal said. 19-year-old Mr. Purthi hails from Ranchi.

According to Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Chinmoy Biswal, Mr. Purthi jumped from fourth floor of Vindyachal hostel and has suffered fractures in legs. He has been admitted to the AIIMS trauma centre. “He was in depression, apparently didn't want to study engineering. His roommate Abhinandan was taking him downstairs. And when he went to call the security guard to help him take Nitish down, the latter climbed up to fourth floor and jumped,” Mr. Biswal said.
