GURUGRAM: The Millennium City is increasingly becoming crime-prone, with at least one murder being reported every three days. Official figures have revealed that as many as 108 murder cases were registered in the city last year — the highest in the state. And all efforts of Gurgaon police to curb crime seem futile as the force itself is grappling with manpower crunch. With a population of an estimated 2.5 million, Gurgaon only has 3,900 cops. The department is officially short of some 900 personnel against a sanctioned strength of nearly 5,000 posts. The rules state there should be one policeman for every 400 residents. In Gurgaon, there is currently one policeman for every 600.According to data released by State Crime Records Bureau, Gurgaon's followed by Sonipat which recorded 107 murders last year.On the other hand, Gurgaon's neighboring Mewat district, which is rather notorious for criminal activities, recorded just 30 murders in 2016. And 64 murder cases were registered in Faridabad last year. In all, the state of Haryana recorded 1,057 murders in 2016 in which 855 men and 235 women were killed, the data revealed. This implies that on an average, every district in the state witnesses 48 murders every year. Decoding the motives behind these murders, it has been found out that 51 murders took place in Haryana because of "gain" of any kind, including monetary, while 253 took place because of personal vendetta or enmity and 108 due to property disputes.Another four in the state took place because of caste conflicts, while only two cases of honour killing were registered in the entire year, the figures revealed. Eight murder cases were registered after rape of women. Interestingly, 19 murders happened because of love affairs and 40 were motivated by illicit relationships, according to the data. A good number of cases could be pinned to any particular motive. This number stood at 421, while 19 murders took place over water or money disputes. Some 73 murders in entire state have been attributed to blind murders, implying their motives could not be determined. The data also showed on an average, attempt to murder cases were 82 in Gurgaon, the same number shared by Sonipat.Sources in police department said this has been the trend and Gurgaon has always recorded highest number of crimes in state and this is not restricted to just murders. "Gurgaon has a huge population with porous borders and understaffed police force which could possibly be reason behind high number of crimes in city, but one cannot be sure behind reasons for a higher crime rate," said a senior police official.
