Guwahati: In a major breakthrough, a self-styled Godman in Guwahati who allegedly made an attempt to rape a woman in Guwahatis Patharquary area was arrested by Noonmati Police on Thursday. As per reports, the accused identified as Jurul Haque alias Ronga Baba frequently changed his name to trick his followers on the pretext of shooing away evils and curing diseases. It is quite interesting to know the fact that the accused identified himself as a Muslim priest among Muslim majority people and as a Hindu in the Hindu majority areas. As per the complaint lodged by the accuser, the self-styled Godman forged a close relationship with the victims family in Patharquary on the pretext of curing diseases. Later, Ronga Baba allegedly attempted to outrage the modesty of the woman in order to cure her diseases. Further police investigation is on. Earlier, on July 10, 2019, Darrang police apprehended one Ramesh Saharia, the self-styled godman who had allegedly influenced the family members of Jadab Saharia to sacrifice a 3-year-old child in Udalguris Kalaigaon area. Saharia was on the run since the incident came to light. Meanwhile, the Udalguri district administration has also ordered a magisterial enquiry into the police firing that left Jadab Saharia, his wife Kalita and son Pulakesh injured. Speaking to the media, Amrit Bhuyan, Superintendent of Police, Darrang, informed that Ramesh Saharia was caught from the Kuruwar area Sipajhar police station where he was hiding at a relatives place. However, Ramesh denying the allegation said that he is a priest not a tantric and was not involved in any kind of killing activities. “I would never suggest anyone perform any kind of human sacrifice being a vegetarian,” said Ramesh.
