Rajasthan assembly elections 2018: Leaders retreat to their home turfs on last day of election campaigning

About 4.75 crore voters will decide the fate of 2,274 candidates in the fray. The voter could be identified by the voter identity card or any other approved identity proof.Both the main political parties - BJP and Congress - claimed the support of the people. All public meetings, processions, advertisements on electronic or television are banned after 5pm on Wednesday.

JAIPUR: The campaign for the December 7 assembly elections came to an end at 5 pm on Wednesday. About 4.75 crore voters will decide the fate of 2,274 candidates in the fray. The elections are being held for 199 of the 200 seats covering over 51,687 polling booths.Voting will be held from 8am to 5pm on December 7 and the results will be announced on December 11. The election to the Ramgarh seat in Alwar district was countermanded due to the death of the BSP candidate.Anand Kumar, chief electoral officer (CEO) Rajasthan said no campaign is allowed after 5pm till the voting is completed on December 7. All public meetings, processions, advertisements on electronic or television are banned after 5pm on Wednesday. Similarly, no campaign will be conducted by way of entertainment programmes such as musical events, drama or any other medium.He said the only requirement for voting is that the voter's name should be there in the voters list. The voter could be identified by the voter identity card or any other approved identity proof.Both the main political parties - BJP and Congress - claimed the support of the people. While BJP tries to break the tradition of alternative governments in every five years, Congress hopes to come back to power riding the anti-incumbency mood in the state. BSP, AAP and Rashtriya Lok Tantrick Morcha have also joined the fray putting up some stiff fight in some constituencies.While the ruling BJP in a final push fielded all the major campaigners including PM Narendra Modi and Amit Shah , Congress has been mainly focusing on local level meetings.Union ministers Rajnath Singh, Smriti Irani , Srikant Sharma addressed public meetings at various places in the state on the last day. Chhattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh also pitched in. Chief minister Vasundhara Raje focussed on her Jhalrapatan seat as the hectic schedule of state-wide campaigning kept her out of the constituency.After a rally of the Congress president Rahul Gandhi at Jaipur on Wednesday was cancelled, former chief minister Ashok Gehlot and PCC chief Sachin Pilot returned to their constituencies of Sardarpura and Tonk, respectively.Congress's poll offensive was led by general secretary in-charge of Rajasthan Avinash Pandey. Yesteryear's cine-star and UPCC president Raj Babbar who has been campaigning in the state for the past few days continued his whirlwind tour of the state while Kumari Shelja, former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Manish Tewari came as reinforcements.
