Kanpur: The minimum temperature plunged further on Thursday night and stood at 1.4 degrees Celsius, almost six degrees below normal. It turned out to be the coldest night of the season. Minimum temperature broke the record of past 13 years. On January 13, 2003, the night temperature was recorded as -1 degree Celsius.The cold north westerly winds worsened the conditions and forced everyone to stay inside their houses. Shopkeepers also found it safe to close their shops much before the closing time. Most of the places in the city wore a deserted look late in the evening.There was further fall in the day temperature. The maximum temperature recorded by Met department on Friday was 17.6 degree Celsius, three degrees below normal. On Thursday, the day temperature was 17.8 degree Celsius. There was respite from the extreme weather in the day as sunshine was bright. But after sun set, people again experienced extreme cold. The Met predicted that there could be further fall in the day and the night temperatures.The weatherman stated that due to clear skies during night time, the minimum temperature has come down so steeply. The clear sky allows earth radiation to go freely in the air during day and hence warmth gets lost. Also the intense cold winds coming from ice-capped mountains from hilly region of North India has added more trouble to prevailing weather condition.The cold weather is likely to continue for the next 48 hours. There are chances of change in wind direction from January 15, which may bring down both day and night temperature.
