KOCHI: Vehicle sale in Ernakulam has slowly started to pick up after the recent floods, which wreaked havoc in the business sector.As many as 1,709 non-motorized vehicles have been registered with the motor vehicles department (MVD) between September 6 and October 5 in Ernakulam division. While, it was 2,291 registrations between July 15 and August 15.There is a decline of registrations of only 581 vehicles in Ernakulam division after the floods.However, MVD officials said that registrations of vehicles had started to pick up in October."Usually, vehicle sale goes up during Onam season. We used to give 800 to 900 temporary registrations per day during the festival season. The registrations come down normally after the festival. However, vehicle sales did not happen as expected during the last Onam season due to the floods. But, there is not much difference in the registrations compared with the same in the previous years," said an MVD official in the regional transport office in Kakkanad MVD office in Kakkanad had achieved 80% of the target amount in tax collection last financial year. "There was good collection till the floods hit the district. We are yet to assess the tax collection after the floods," said the officer.Meanwhile, showrooms give exchange offers to vehicles that got partially damaged in the floods."We replace the partially-damaged vehicles, which can be rectified later, with new ones to customers. If a car got completely damaged in the floods and the customer wants to buy a new vehicle, we give them special consideration," said an official in MGF Hyundai service centre in the district.Insurance surveyors had said more than 10,000 claims would come up after the floods across the state and the insurance claim would cross over Rs 1,000 crore.
