BJP wins over Shiv Sena to rule Sangli, Kolhapur ZPs

Although Shiv Sena declared support to the Congress-NCP alliance on Monday night, some Sena members shifted their loyalties to the BJP overnight. The NCP emerged at the second spot winning 14 seats, followed by Congress (10 seats) and Shiv Sena (three seats). The NCP won 11 seats and Shiv Sena 10. The Congress and BJP had won seven seats each and Shiv Sena two. Reshma Rahul Desai of Congress from Bhudargad and Vijay Borage of NCP from Shahuwadi remained absent.Sarjerao Patil of Shiv Sena defeated Jaywant Shimpi of NCP by nine votes to emerge the Kolhapur ZP vice-president.

Kolhapur: The BJP on Tuesday won the elections to the posts of chairmen of Kolhapur and Sangli zilla parishads (ZPs) with the help of Shiv Sena, which got vice-presidents' posts.The NCP, which has a clear majority in Satara ZP , retained the president's and vice-president's posts.In Kolhapur, after a series of claims by the BJP and Congress-NCP alliance, the BJP emerged victorious defeating the Congress-NCP for the first time.Shoumika Mahadik became the president by defeating Congress's Banda Mane by nine votes. Mahadik secured 37 votes out of 67 and Mane 28 votes. Reshma Rahul Desai of Congress from Bhudargad and Vijay Borage of NCP from Shahuwadi remained absent.Sarjerao Patil of Shiv Sena defeated Jaywant Shimpi of NCP by nine votes to emerge the Kolhapur ZP vice-president. Patil secured 37 votes and Shimpi 28.The picture was not clear until Monday night with both BJP and Congress-NCP alliance boasting of victory. Although Shiv Sena declared support to the Congress-NCP alliance on Monday night, some Sena members shifted their loyalties to the BJP overnight. On Tuesday morning, eight Sena members declared support to the BJP and accompanied Mahadik to the ZP to file the nomination form.All the newly elected ZP members arrived at the ZP premises in luxury buses under protection of respective party members.The general body meeting, presided by sub-divisional magistrate Sachin Ithape, began around 3 pm. Two candidates were in fray for the post of ZP president and two for vice-president. After completing the formalities, the voting process began by show of hand and the results were announced immediately.In the elections on February 21, BJP and Congress emerged as largest parties, winning 14 seats each. The NCP won 11 seats and Shiv Sena 10. Jansurajya Party bagged six seats, Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana two and others 10 seats.Shoumika Mahadik, who represents the Shiroli constituency, is second time member of ZP. His wife, Amal Mahadik, a BJP MLA represents Kolhapur south assembly segment and is the daughter-in-law of Congress leader Mahadev Mahadik.In Satara, Sanjeevraje Naik-Nimbalkar of NCP was unanimously declared ZP president and Vasantrao Mankumare vice-president.The NCP had won 39 seats out of 64 in the district. The Congress and BJP had won seven seats each and Shiv Sena two. Local groups like Karad Taluka Vikas Aghadi and Satara Vikas Aghadi bagged three seats each and Patan Vikas Aghadi one. Two seats were bagged by independent candidates.In Sangli, Sangram Deshmukh of BJP secured 35 to defeat Congress's Satyajeet Deshmukh, who bagged 10 votes. Shiv Sena won the post of vice-president with Suhas Babar securing 35 votes defeating NCP's Chandrakant Patil.With 23 seats out of 60 in its kitty, the BJP had emerged as single largest party in the Sangli ZP. The NCP emerged at the second spot winning 14 seats, followed by Congress (10 seats) and Shiv Sena (three seats). Others including Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana won 10 seats.
