Fire breaks out at Kozhikode's SM street

Seven units of fire tenders rushed to the street, which had witnessed similar fire outbreaks several times over the past few years. Street, popularly known as Mithai Theruvu, in Kozhikode around 11.30 a.m. No casualty has been reported so far. Around 15 shops were gutted in a major fire outbreak in the busy S.M. The fire reportedly broke out in textile shop and spread to neighbouring outlets in the thickly-packed street which is estimated to have around 1,000 shops. In 2007, a similar fire outbreak at fire cracker shop had claimed nine lives.

Though the exact cause of fire is yet to be determined, unconfined sources said it could possibly be due to faulty wiring. Fire and Rescue Services personnel have removed the gas cylinders from some of the shops as a precautionary measure. The fire was brought under control around 1.15 p.m. Incidentally, a similar fire occured near the same spot in 2010. In 2007, a similar fire outbreak at fire cracker shop had claimed nine lives.
