Ludhiana: Despite repeated complaints from traders, the municipal corporation has failed to resolve the problem of overflowing sewers near Giaspura. The traders have been complaining to the civic body over choked sewers and overflowing sewage on the main road and internal streets. This has been the condition for the past one year but the civic authorities have not done much to solve the problem.“We have been facing this problem for more than a year now and it gets more difficult when we see customers who come to our shops falling on these roads,” said one of the traders, Lucky Chauhan. Residents of the nearby areas of ward number 30 too have been facing a tough time. Nisha Sharma, one of the residents of the area said, “From the last two days we have not even been receiving fresh water and on the contrary, sewage water is getting mixed with fresh water from the last two years.’’ She said that they had developed health issues because of that but the civic authorities have given a deaf year.Though several authorities including MLA and MPs have visited the area and have assured of corrective actions but nothing has happened so far. Councillor of ward number 30, Jaspal Singh said that they did realise the [problems being faced by the residents and have started taking corrective measures as well. “The tendering process for clearing all the pipelines that was causing the choking has already started. It is estimated to cost an amount of 44 lakhs. The work will be allotted once the mayor has reviewed the requirement,” Jagdeep Singh a resident of the area said that the residents have collectively tried to work together to clear the sewage so that vehicles could enter the street but without any instruments it gets difficult. “Constant water stagnation and open gutters have only added to the problems,” said Singh. Despite efforts it has not benefited the residents. The sewerage water in the area increases and stays at a level for days together. “Residents are forced to living with it because of the casual attitude of the civic authorities,” said another resident Neelu Garg. She said that the residents have been suffering and some have had to even visit hospitals. In some areas transformers also pose a threat especially to school going children. The broken roads have only added to the existing problems.
