Further those who are medically unfit were also asked to report with their application and medical certificate at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Cemetery Road. The lapse came to the fore when school representatives rushed to the district education department on Saturday seeking rectification. There were also cases in which the board appointed pregnant and physically challenged teachers for the duty, overlooking the provisions. What surprised us was that we don't have teachers by such names in our school. "Another teacher pointed out that he had been appointed as investigator in two centres for same exam and on the same date. The final decision of assigning duties is taken by the board."

LUDHIANA: Board exams might be a serious business for students who would appear for class X and XII examinations in the next few days, but Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) seem to be playing it casual when it comes to assigning examination duties to teachers.PSEB has assigned duties to even those teachers who had retired from services years ago. The lapse came to the fore when school representatives rushed to the district education department on Saturday seeking rectification. There were also cases in which the board appointed pregnant and physically challenged teachers for the duty, overlooking the provisions. In many cases, a single teacher was assigned examination duty in more than one centre on the same day and at same time.Notably, schools have even received letters for the appointment of teachers for the duty, who don't even exist.Board examination of class XII and X, would commence from February 28 and March 14, respectively. On Friday, district education office (secondary) had issued instructions to the schools seeking details of such cases. Further those who are medically unfit were also asked to report with their application and medical certificate at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Cemetery Road. On Saturday, entire district education office (secondary) staff along with senior officials including district education officer (secondary) Sarabjit Singh was in the school where teachers thronged the venue to get their duties cancelled or changed. The TOI team came across several teachers who were ready with a host of interesting reasons for making a request for change of their duty of place. Some of the most common reasons cited included examination centres located far away, unavailability of direct bus service from residence to the center, unavailability of full-time baby sitter and knee pain and back pain problem.Officials meanwhile mentioned that there were a few genuine cases as well.A school in-charge, requesting anonymity, said, "I received a letter with the names of two female teachers who were appointed on the examination duty. What surprised us was that we don't have teachers by such names in our school."Another teacher pointed out that he had been appointed as investigator in two centres for same exam and on the same date. Besides, there were many cases where physically challenged teachers were assigned duties.District education officer (secondary) Sarabjit Singh said, "Today we have received approximately 150 applications out of which requests of around 100 applicants were genuine and have been sent to the state board for approval." The schools would be alerted after the approval of from board by Monday, he said.Asked about the goof up in assigning duties, the DEO said, "We are asked to send the list of all teachers, in which we also specify the conditions like if a teacher is physically challenged. The final decision of assigning duties is taken by the board."
