more-in MADURAI In yet another instance of alleged irregularities in Madurai Kamraj University’s (MKU) constituent college in Tirumangalam, a section of faculty members accused the administration of admitting more students than the sanctioned strength to such an extent that many of them do not have place to sit in classrooms. According to the faculty members, while the sanctioned strength to each course was 60, admission of 20 % more was allowed as per instructions of the Higher Education department. However, the constituent college has reportedly admitted more than 90 students in most courses. “The number has crossed even 100 in some of the departments,” said one of the faculty members speaking on anonymity. M. Periyasamy, a guest lecturer in the Department of Tamil at the college, who had petitioned the Controller of Examinations of MKU in this regard, alleged that despite admitting such a large number of students, more admissions were going on even now. “As per instructions from the university and Higher Education department, the last date for admission was August 31, 2018. However, a number of students have been admitted after this cut-off date by fabricating records,” he claimed. He said that the college did not have adequate infrastructure, including toilets and drinking water, to cater to such a large number of students. “Importantly, there is not enough space and furnitute for students to sit, because of which some skip classes,” he said. Pointing out that the students who joined after August 31, 2018, did not have adequate attendance to appear for examinations, Mr. Periyasamy had appealed to the Controller of Examinations to enquire into the matter. It can be recollected that the college already came under scanner for collecting around ? 5,000 to ? 10,000 from students for admission without receipts. An enquiry was conducted based on a complaint from an affected student, following which the person who collected the money assured to return it. M. Somasundaram, Principal, was not available for his comments. O. Ravi, Controller of Examinations, MKU, said that principals of all colleges had already been asked to furnish details of their sanctioned strength and number of students admitted. “Some colleges may have admitted more students in anticipation of approval from the office of Dean (College Development Council). I will enquire into the issue,” he said.
