Physical Education teacherattempts suicide

A physical education teacher of a school has attempted suicide alleging harassment by the headmistress and two others of the school management here. According to Malpe police, as per the complainant, Prabhavati, her brother, Nagaraj, was working as physical education teacher at Mount Rosary School at Kallianpur-Santhekatte for the last 14 years. Unable to bear this, Mr. Nagaraj made an attempt to end his life near K.G. She alleged that Mr. Nagaraj was harassed by Sister Regina, headmistress of the school, Father Lawrence D’Souza, Secretary of the Catholic Education Board, Udupi, and Father Phillip Neri, Correspondent of the school. Meanwhile, a protest was held in front of the school, which is under Udupi Diocese, demanding action in the matter on Saturday.

They used to deliberately find fault with Mr. Nagaraj’s work and also asked him to leave and threatened him, she alleged. Unable to bear this, Mr. Nagaraj made an attempt to end his life near K.G. Road Bridge on Thursday and was found unconscious. He was then rushed to a private hospital for treatment, Ms. Prabhavati alleged in her complaint. A case has been registered under the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and Sections 504, 506, read with Section 34 of Indian Penal Code at the Malpe police station. Investigation is on, the police said. Meanwhile, a protest was held in front of the school, which is under Udupi Diocese, demanding action in the matter on Saturday. “We are seized of the matter. We will conduct an inquiry and its outcome will be made known to all,” said Rev. Fr. Dennis D’Sa, Public Relations Officer of the Udupi Catholic Diocese on Saturday.
