Fashion institute offers Tulabhara to civic workers, who sweep city roads

It was Mangalore Institute of Fashion Technology (MIFT) College that celebrated its annual day in a very unique way. This year, the idea of inviting and honouring civic workers was conceptualized by our director M G Hegde. The institute also dedicated a special fashion show for the civic workers and their family members. For civic workers, the only aim in life is to keep their wards clean and they do it selflessly without bothering the meager returns they earn through it. Hence, we thought of honouring them suitably so that society recognizes their service," Shetty said.Mangalore University vice-chancellor K Byrappa said that the initiative will help eradicate the inequality prevailing in the society with regard to the job civic workers do.

MANGALURU: Civic workers Gulabi of ward number 9, Nagesh of ward 11 and Monappa of ward 14 of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) never dreamt of being honoured with 'Tulabhara' and share dais with dignitaries like university vice-chancellor and a former minister.Those three civic workers (Poura Karmikas) of MCC were spellbound when a reputed fashion technology institute in the city honoured them recognising their sincere and selfless service to keep their respective wards 'swachh'. It was Mangalore Institute of Fashion Technology (MIFT) College that celebrated its annual day in a very unique way. A special Tulabhara, an offering generally made only to deities in temples and to religious seers, was offered to three civic workers to honour their service.Tulabhara was offered with rice bags weighing 60 kg and the same was gifted to them. In addition, those Poura Karmikas were also given gift vouchers and cash awards by the organisers. That's not all. The institute also dedicated a special fashion show for the civic workers and their family members. Children and family members of civic workers walked the ramp along with the students of MIFT at the Town Hall on Saturday.MIFT chairman and former minister B Nagaraj Shetty said the institute held a novel programme as part of its annual day to give emphasis on job equality. "Earlier, we had organized fashion show for visually challenged children and for inmates of old age homes. This year, the idea of inviting and honouring civic workers was conceptualized by our director M G Hegde. For civic workers, the only aim in life is to keep their wards clean and they do it selflessly without bothering the meager returns they earn through it. Hence, we thought of honouring them suitably so that society recognizes their service," Shetty said.Mangalore University vice-chancellor K Byrappa said that the initiative will help eradicate the inequality prevailing in the society with regard to the job civic workers do. "This is totally a new and well-thought experiment that needs to be replicated by all institutions and organisations," Byrappa said.
