Meerut: After a pig was caught on camera consuming a stillborn on the premises of Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial (LLRM) Medical College, hospital authorities blamed it on municipal officials’ apathy towards free-roaming stray animals.According to hospital authorities, they have lodged numerous written complaints with the municipal commissioner, but all have gone unanswered.Principal Dr RC Gupta said, “After a patient, Shammo, gave birth to a stillborn at PL Sharma district hospital, she was referred to the medical college, and the stillborn boy was handed over to one of her relatives — a receipt of which is also available with us. The body, however, accidentally slipped out of the relative’s grab on the hospital campus and the pig consumed it. The relative was in such a haste to admit the mother, who was in critical condition, at the medical college hospital that she failed to notice it.”In a written clarification, Ilmas, the father of the stillborn, stated, “The body slipped out of my mother’s grab inadvertently, as we all were in a haste to admit my wife, who was critical, to the hospital.”Notably, the problem of stray animals roaming on the medical college campus is rampant for long, but no action was taken.“We have written time and again to the municipal authorities, but no action was taken. We have also appointed a person, who brings a langoor on the campus to keep monkeys at the bay. But, it’s really difficult for us to get rid of all animals, including dogs and pigs, roaming freely on the campus,” said Dr Gupta.Mayor Sunita Verma, however, denied that she had ever received any written complaint from the medical college. “But, I will look into the matter and ensure swift action,” she assured.
