Meerut: A day after celebrating their supremo’s birthday, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) on Monday announced that Mayawati will address Meerut on February 1. This will be her first rally after the Election Commission enforced the model code of conduct on January4.The venue of the rally, however, is yet to be finalized. Mayawati’s trusted aide Naseemudddin Siddiqui is also set to reach Meerut on Tuesday to take a meeting to check the preparations in place for the coming rally.Speaking to TOI, Raviraj Singh, BSP Meerut zonal coordinator, said, “Mayawati will be addressing her first rally post the enforcement of the model code of conduct, which was announced on January 4. The rally will happen in Meerut. The first phase of polling is set to take place in West UP cities like Meerut, Baghpat, Bulandshahr and others. And Meerut being a centre point for all, has been finalized as the venue.”Party sources also added that the historic significance was another reason for the party to choose Meerut to start their poll campaign. “The rebellion of 1857 against British East India Company was started from Meerut, so there can be no better place than Meerut to start the poll campaign for BSP,” added the source. While party leaders refused to come on record to divulge the venue of the rally, sources told TOI that a ground opposite Subharti University has been finalized as the venue for the rally. “The ground that has been finalized belongs to Meerut Development Authority (MDA) and permission for the same has been taken,” said a party leader, on the condition of anonymity.
