Another leopard cub dies of starvation

Bijnor: Starvation has claimed the lives of two leopard cubs in Bijnor district over the past 15 days.The carcass of a leopard cub was found in a fodder field near Mohanpur Chanda Nangli village under Haldaur police station on Friday. According to forest officials, the cub was suffering from gastroenteritis and died as a result.Giving details, DFO, Bijnor, M Semmaran told TOI, “The cub was six to eight months old and it weighed about 10 kg. They drink this water and fall sick.According to data, there are more than hundred leopards and their cubs in the district. They saw it from a distance and started making a noise to scare the cub away. According to the post-mortem report, the cub was suffering form gastroenteritis.

Villagers found it dead in a field and informed us. According to the post-mortem report, the cub was suffering form gastroenteritis. It’s stomach was empty.“The reason for its death was probably separation from its mother. It could not get food on its own,” said Semmaran.According to villagers, one Priyansu Kumar had spotted the carcass lying in the field. He ran back to inform the villager. They gathered at the spot with sticks and sharp objects. They saw it from a distance and started making a noise to scare the cub away. But there was no movement. Then, villagers went near it and saw that it was dead. Villagers informed the forest officials.After a team of forest officials reached the field, they took charge of the carcass and sent it to the veterinary hospital at Haldaur for a post-mortem.Earlier, on February 11, a cub that had entered a farm house in Manjhola-Billoch village under Noorpur area, also died of starvation.According to villagers, the sightings of the leopards and their cubs have been increased for sometime. After clearing of sugarcane fields, confrontations between human beings and leopards have increased.In summer season many animals, have come in search of water pools. Water pools are generally contaminated and polluted. They drink this water and fall sick.According to data, there are more than hundred leopards and their cubs in the district. Nowadays their lives are under threat.
