McD withdraws Coke Zero, rly canteens, malls under FDA lens

The railway canteens and malls which sell such drinks with artificial sweetener are now under scanner along with other brands that manufacture such drinks. The food chain has now written to the FDA that they have stopped the sale of Coke Zero in their 60 outlets of which 40 are in Mumbai. "The regular coke which is sold will be allowed but outlets which sell cold drinks made from artificial sweeteners will be probed," said FDA Commissioner Dr Harshadeep Kamble. "We will be cracking down on the fast food joints, railway canteens and multiplexes to inspect sale of cold drinks made from artificial sweeteners. Other brands and outlets that sell such cold drinks will also be probed," said Kamble.

The food chain has now written to the FDA that they have stopped the sale of Coke Zero in their 60 outlets of which 40 are in Mumbai Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), after learning from their Kolhapur division about Coke Zero being served from dispensing units and sold loosely in unlabelled glasses at McDonalds outlet to customers including children, prohibited its sale at McDonalds outlets. The food chain has now written to the FDA that they have stopped the sale of Coke Zero in their 60 outlets of which 40 are in Mumbai. "The regular coke which is sold will be allowed but outlets which sell cold drinks made from artificial sweeteners will be probed," said FDA Commissioner Dr Harshadeep Kamble. Other brands and outlets that sell such cold drinks will also be probed," said Kamble. A senior official from vigilance department of FDA said, "We have received complaints from consumers about sale of such products from the dispensing units and have collected the samples for testing to ascertain if it contains artificial sweeteners." "Strictest action will be taken against such eateries and their food licenses will be canceled for violating the Food Safety and Standard Regulations," the official said After Coke Zero, the Maharashtra FDA department has now collected samples of various other such aerated drinks from their dispensing units across the state, to ascertain if the artificial sweetener which contains aspartame and acesulfame potassium is added in them. The railway canteens and malls which sell such drinks with artificial sweetener are now under scanner along with other brands that manufacture such drinks.
