Five-day inter-school tennis tourney begins at Mysuru Tennis Club

MYSURU: The 62nd national U-17 and U-14 inter-school tennis tournament, being held for boys and girls by the department of public instruction and School Games' Federation of India, kick-started at Mysuru Tennis Club (MTC) here on Tuesday.Promising tennis players from across the country will be seen in action during the five-day tournament. The participants are practising on the synthetic courts. From each state, 25 participants, including players, coaches and managers, are part of the team. Only if they are in the pink of their health that they can prove to be an asset to the country.

MYSURU: The 62nd national U-17 and U-14 inter-school tennis tournament, being held for boys and girls by the department of public instruction and School Games' Federation of India, kick-started at Mysuru Tennis Club (MTC) here on Tuesday.Promising tennis players from across the country will be seen in action during the five-day tournament. As many as 450 participants from 25 states will vie for top honours. From each state, 25 participants, including players, coaches and managers, are part of the team. For the smooth conduct of the competitions, over 50 referees have been put on the job. Some of the matches will be played under floodlights at MTC.Speaking after inaugurating the tournament, MLA Vasu said that the state government, right from the regime of the maharajas, has been encouraging sports.H A Venkatesh, chairman of Mysore Paints and Varnishes Ltd, said: "Equal importance should be given to both education and sports because only the latter helps students keep fit. Only if they are in the pink of their health that they can prove to be an asset to the country. Like how marks are given to students depending on how they perform in academics, marks with regard to their performance in sports and cultural events should also be given. Only then we can expect more number of students to get into sports and extra-curricular activities."At the statrt of the U-17 boys match at court number 1 between Tamil Nadu and CBSE, Tamil Nadu coach Ragavan tried to take the chair to the shade. But one of the organizing committee members objected to the same. When this was brought to the notice of chief match referee Amardeep Singh and match observer Naveen Sharma, they summoned Ragavan and warned him.Singh and Sharma, who have come from New Delhi, were impressed with the facility, especially the five synthetic courts at MTC. "We are happy with the arrangements for the tournament. All the five courts here look good. The participants are practising on the synthetic courts. They will get rich experience as all the matches will be played on synthetic courts," added Amardeep.
