"The check nakas at the entry and exit points will be needed. Police officials said the eight check nakas would be mainly on important roads that lead into the city. It is likely to take preventive action against them. We are planning bandobast, but were awaiting the announcement of sensitive and non-sensitive wards of the city from the concerned authorities. They may have crimes like riots, body offences or property offences registered against them.

Nashik: The city police have drawn up a list of 619 anti-socials and goons who could create law and order problems in the city during the civic polls slated on February 21. It is likely to take preventive action against them."We would soon be serving notices on such elements under different sections of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and the Mumbai Police Act. A list of such people has been prepared," said commissioner of police Ravinder Kumar Singhal.Of the 619 people in the list, 38 criminals are likely to be externed from the district during the elections. Certain criminals would be booked under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act and the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act.Senior officials said that notices will also be served to 251 anti-socials against whom there are cases which are political in nature. "Such persons are associated with political parties; some are even corporators. They may have crimes like riots, body offences or property offences registered against them. Notices would be served on them cautioning them about their activities," police officials said.Sachin Gore, assistant commissioner of police (crime), said that they generally get a bond written from such people that they would not indulge in any kind of criminal activity. If they go against their undertaking they could face a jail term.Another 122 people are those who have been served noticed under Section 110 of the CrPC. "These are habitual criminals, from whom we have taken an undertaking that if they violate the bond they would be sent to jail for at least seven days," officials said. There are 30 others who would be presented before a court under section 151(3) and detained for a period of 15 days. Senior officials said that these 30 people, who had election-related offences registered against them during the last elections in the city, have been chargesheeted and action will also be taken against them.Police officials said there is always a possibility of aspiring candidates getting threatened by the established ones, and also voters being threatened by political leaders and their activists to vote for them or campaign for them.On the backdrop of all such things, police have decided to take preventive action against those who may play spoilsport during the elections.Police to set up eight check nakas across city: The Nashik police would soon be setting up check nakas at eight entry and exit points of the city taking into account the possibility of money or weapons being transported in or out of the city during the election period.Senior police officials said check nakas would also serve the purpose of keeping a check on the movement of seasoned criminals. With the city gearing up for upcoming civic elections, the police too have chalked out their plan to ensure that the polls take place in a free and fair manner. Police officials said the eight check nakas would be mainly on important roads that lead into the city."There are many things that occur during the time of elections everywhere. Money is distributed among people, candidates who file their nomination are kidnapped, weapons come into the city, while externed criminals also sneak into the city for illegal activities," said a police officer."The check nakas at the entry and exit points will be needed. We are planning bandobast, but were awaiting the announcement of sensitive and non-sensitive wards of the city from the concerned authorities.
