The mechanised boat owners from 18 coastal hamlets gathered in front of the Head Post Office to express their ire against the government for the delay in removing the silt.

Addressing the gathering, association president Bhaskaran said the dredging work got delayed because of the persistent stand taken by the Lt. Governor against going for an open tender to allot the work. As per the advice of the Lieutenant Governor, the dredging work was allotted to the Dredging Corporation of India. The dredger operated by DCI is erratic and in the last one month it had functioned only for about 10 days, he said. He said the fishermen could not operate their boats for the last four months because of accumulation of silt in the rivermouth. The association threatened to call for a bandh in Puducherry and Karaikal if the situation persisted, he said.
