FDA raids water packaging cos in 17 districts, seals one

RAIPUR: Officials of food and drug administration department on Friday collected 28 packaged drinking water samples from companies running illegally in 17 districts across the state.Officials said one such company was sealed after it was found that tap water was being packed in bottles and it didn't have the requisite certificate. "A company Asha Jal was sealed on the spot as it didn't have the Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) certificate which is mandatory for any water packaging company to possess. "But FDA would keep an eye on them and nab them soon," Dr Dewangan said.Companies raided were located in Raipur, Raigarh, Ambikapur, Mahasamund, Janjgir, Dhamtari, Baloda Bazaar, Gariyaband, Bemetara, Korba, Balrampur, Mungeli, Rajnandgaon, Kawardha, Kondagaon, Balod and Bilaspur.

Further action would be taken once the samples are tested in lab, the officials added.Soon after orders were issued to conduct sudden raid at packaged drinking water companies, teams of food security officers simultaneously conducted raids at 17 districts and collected 28 samples of packaged water.Talking to TOI, Dr Ashwini Dewangan, assistant commissioner, food and drug administration department, said that the raid was collectively planned in 17 districts that went on from 11 am to 8 pm on Thursday. "A company Asha Jal was sealed on the spot as it didn't have the Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) certificate which is mandatory for any water packaging company to possess. Also, more than 90% of other companies that are into supplying chilled jars (water dispensers) weren't having the BIS against whom action would be taken," Dewangan said.He added that the samples would be sent to FDA lab and a report would be submitted within 14 days' time following which action would be taken against the violators.Dewangan said that as the raid was conducted simultaneously, the information was leaked among the companies and many of them escaped after locking the stores."But FDA would keep an eye on them and nab them soon," Dr Dewangan said.Companies raided were located in Raipur, Raigarh, Ambikapur, Mahasamund, Janjgir, Dhamtari, Baloda Bazaar, Gariyaband, Bemetara, Korba, Balrampur, Mungeli, Rajnandgaon, Kawardha, Kondagaon, Balod and Bilaspur.
