Surat: A Gujarati doctor couple settled in Florida of the United States of America, who last year donated $200 million to a private university there, has set their eyes on the Diamond City.Philanthropist and cardiologist Dr Kiran Patel and his wife Dr Pallavi Patel, who are working to build a state-of-the-art medical college in Gujarat, have funded $60 million to Concept Medical Inc, a Florida-headquartered company of Surti entrepreneur Manish Doshi, for manufacturing the world’s first sirolimus-coated balloon for heart patients through its subsidiary in Surat.The city, famous for its Rs90,000 crore diamond industry, has emerged as the biggest manufacturer of cardiac stents in India. In fact, nine of the 11 Indian companies manufacturing stents are based in Surat and Vapi. There is a reason for it: the laser technology that revolutionized diamond cutting has been the lifeblood of the stent industry.Gujarat's companies have captured a phenomenal 30% market share in Indian coronary stent market, valued at over $400 million, roughly Rs2,500 crore. Overall, Indian companies have 40% share because domestic stents come 30 per cent cheaper.“We have a subsidiary in Surat where all products are manufactured. The funds will be utilized to augment clinical data and clinical registries to quality for reimbursement in European markets,” says founder and managing director of the company, Manish Doshi.Sirolimus balloon catheter is a drug-coated balloon , which is a replacement of the stent. If a stent cannot be placed in human body or doesn’t have a good outcome, then sirolimus balloon is used. Drug is getting delivered from balloon surface, which is not a permanent implant. However, within 60 seconds of inflation of balloon, drug has to get transferred to the affected area of the vessel wall and drug should have in-tissue release.Dr Kiran Patel told TOI, “Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are number one cause of death globally, representing 31 per cent of all global deaths. It is increasing due to changes in lifestyle and increase in hypertension among young and old. I am excited to be a part of the company whose research and innovative technologies will go a long way in saving lives of patients with diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.”
