Wake-up call to women

The dance-drama, ‘Khoj’, is based on Meera Nair’s poems on women. At a time when there is talk about curbing women’s freedom in the name of ‘security’, 11 dancers from JG College of Performing Arts, Ahmedabad, are encouraging women to break free with a creative expression on women empowerment, which will be staged in the city. While in many real-life cases, women are forced to dump their dreams after marriage, the dance-drama takes a positive turn, with the lead character rising up to claim her rights and dreams. It is about a girl who grows up in a pleasant family atmosphere, with joy, freedom and dreams of her own. Then I set about bringing a story out of it that we could perform,” says Bijoy, Principal of JG College of Performing Arts.

At a time when there is talk about curbing women’s freedom in the name of ‘security’, 11 dancers from JG College of Performing Arts, Ahmedabad, are encouraging women to break free with a creative expression on women empowerment, which will be staged in the city. The dance-drama, ‘Khoj’, is based on Meera Nair’s poems on women. Scripted and choreographed by renowned Bharatanatyam dancer Bijoy Shivram Anand, the production is being staged as a fund-raiser. “The coordinator of the programme Geetha Eswaran is the one who sends me Meera’s poems. Then I set about bringing a story out of it that we could perform,” says Bijoy, Principal of JG College of Performing Arts. The thread, he says, is one we usually see around us. It is about a girl who grows up in a pleasant family atmosphere, with joy, freedom and dreams of her own. “But after marriage she finds herself in a surrounding that is unpleasantly different from her expectations of married life,” explains Bijoy. While in many real-life cases, women are forced to dump their dreams after marriage, the dance-drama takes a positive turn, with the lead character rising up to claim her rights and dreams. Bijoy says, “I want to send a message to all girls that one can always come out of such situations if you are strong, confident and brave enough to face the consequences.” Bijoy has been choreographing dance-dramas for charity, most often with themes on sujbects of social relevance. The performance is part of a fund-raising event for Prathiba Poshini, an initiative of senior citizens of the city, which sponsors the education of bright but economically weak students. The show will be staged at Ganesham, Soorya’s open-air theatre near Thycaud at 6 pm today. For passes, contact 9846326247
