Black gram cultivation picks up pace, thanks to govt subsidies

Times News NetworkTrichy: Black gram cultivation has picked up pace in Trichy district, after the agriculture department began distributing free inputs for pulse production, especially in areas where water is available. "The critical inputs include quality certified black gram seeds, Trichoderma Viridi and micro nutrients. The agriculture department has also begun training interested farmers in water-saving techniques.Following the drought situation that has been prevailing in the state, the agriculture department has come up with a special package scheme for pulses , particularly for black gram cultivation. Trichy district is one of the the 17 districts chosen for the scheme. To use the available water effectively, micro irrigation systems like rain gun and portable sprinklers are also distributed to farmers at subsidized cost under Prime Minister Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) scheme," he said.The joint director appealed to farmers with irrigation potential to contact field staff of the agriculture department to get assistance in taking up black gram cultivation.

Trichy district is one of the the 17 districts chosen for the scheme."In this scheme, more than 3750 acres have been earmarked to execute the project in 11 blocks which include Anthanallur, Manikandam, Tiruverumbur, Musiri, Thottiam, Thuraiyur, Uppiliapuram, Marungapuri, Lalgudi, Pullambadi and Mannachanallur," said joint director of agriculture SM Uduman Mohideen.Under this scheme, the required inputs for pulses cultivation would be supplied to farmers who have sufficient ground water, he said. "The critical inputs include quality certified black gram seeds, Trichoderma Viridi and micro nutrients.
