‘Plasticulture’ brings windfall for city farmers

Vadodara: Till five years ago, Daxesh Patel, who owns farmland near Nandesari and Savli, used to export bananas worth about Rs 50 lakh. He had learnt about the new farming technique called 'fruit covering' at the awareness programmes organized by Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) near Nandesari. But he took to 'plasticulture' and since then he has been reaping benefits of the new farming technique. Most of the bananas land up in Islamabad and there is special demand for the bananas we grow here," Patel told TOI. "In fact, most of the stock I export goes to Pakistan via Jammu and Kashmir border.
