Mother, two sons drown in underground water tank

Vadodara: Tragedy struck Bhati family living near Santoshnagar in Tandalja on Monday evening as three of the family members drowned in underground water tank of the house.According to police officials, two-year-old Uttam Bhati accidentally fell in the water tank while playing in the compound of the house. When Uttam's mother Mamta (25) learnt about it, she jumped in the tank to save her son. Neighbours said that the Bhati family, originally hailing from Rajasthan, had moved to the current house around 10 months ago. Meanwhile, her five-month-old son Gautam too accidentally fell in the tank.Both, the police and fire department are clueless how the five-month-old fell in the tank. Before the ambulance reached there, the two children were taken out of the tank and rushed to a nearby private hospital in auto-rickshaw.

"It can be understood that the woman must have jumped to save her son, but how the infant too fell in the tank is not being known," said a source in the fire department.Eye-witnesses told the police that when the woman and the two children fell, some neighbours shouted for help after which a crowd gathered there and one of them informed 108 emergency services and Vadodara Fire and Emergency Services (VFES). Before the ambulance reached there, the two children were taken out of the tank and rushed to a nearby private hospital in auto-rickshaw. Few minutes later the woman was then taken out and was also taken to a private hospital. Unfortunately, all three were declared brought dead by doctors at the hospitals.Police said that when the incident happened, Mamta's husband Mukesh, who runs supermarket outside their house, was not at home. Neighbours said that the Bhati family, originally hailing from Rajasthan, had moved to the current house around 10 months ago. A case of accidental death was registered at JP Road police station."As of now it looks like a case of accident, but once we take statements of family members we will be able to know what exactly happened," said R H Vala, police sub-inspector, JP Road police station.
