Employees of over 50 companies and several educational institutions, including Tech Mahindra, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Chegg India, WNS Global Services Pvt. Ltd. and NTPC, have taken a pledge to go cashless in response to the Digital India campaign. Responding to the demonetisation decision on November 8 and the call by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reduce cash transactions, the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) in coordination with other agencies organised a series of meetings to popularise digital transactions. Joint Director and Officer-in-Charge of the STPI M.P. Dubey told The Hindu that the response was quite encouraging as thousands of employees and the companies, most of them in manufacturing and IT sector, responded immediately. “They have taken a pledge to pay salaries and other payments online and ask the employees to use NEFT facility and digital wallets. This will certainly lead to transformation from cash to banking economy,” Mr. Dubey said. During the awareness programmes, the STPI officials gave e-presentations on the importance of cashless economy and digital transactions creating sensitisation at meetings held at Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Visakhapatnam Port Trust, NTPC Simhadri Super Thermal Power Station, IT and ITES units like WNS Global Services Pvt. Ltd, Tech Mahindra, Patra India BPO, Chegg India, AP Police and educational institutes like Andhra University, Vignan Institute of Information Technology, Sri Chaitanya Engineering College, ICAI, IGIAT, BITS and Kendriya Vidyalaya. More than 15,000 people participated in the awareness programmes and the response received from every quarter had been phenomenal. “We were the first to respond immediately after the call. Now all our transactions are digital and the employees also have switched over to almost 100 per cent cashless transactions,” said Director of Chegg India, one of the leading IT companies, which prepares educational contents from its Visakhapatnam office for its American clients.
