    Dr. Rajendra Prasad became president for the second time where he won with 459,698 votes over his rivals Chowdhry Hari Ram who got 2,672 votes and Nagendra Narayan Das who got 2,000 votes.

  • Businessman and philanthropist Alagappa Chettiar died

    Born in Kottaiyur in the Sivaganga District of Tamil Nadu,  Dr. Alagappa Chettiar took his last breath on 5th April, 1957. He launched his career by pioneering in textiles. In 1937 he started Cochin Textiles, later Alagappa Textiles at Alagappa Nagar near Thrissur in Kerala.  When he died prematurely at the age of 48, Dr. Alagappa Chettiar had already redefined philanthropy and contributed more to the betterment of education in Tamil Nadu than any other person

    On April 1, 1957, India issued a new decimal coinage. One rupee had 100 naye paise instead of 64 old paise. Three annas were made equal to 19 paise, two annas equal to 13 paise and 1 anna was only 6 paise.

    After the takeover of Hyderabad, the Osmania sicca, a 148-year-old currency, especially the denomination of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000  was converted to Indian rupees in 1957.

    The Armed Forces Special Powers Ordinance 1958 was promulgated by the President Dr. Rajendra Prasad on 22 May 1958. Later, it was replaced by the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 on 11 September 1958. The act empowered only the governors of the states and the administrators of the Union Territories to declare areas in the concerned State or the Union Territory as disturbed.
