  • MG Ramachandran dies after Prolonged illness

    On December 24,  MG Ramachandran died at 3:30 am in his Ramavaram Gardens residence in Manapakkam after his prolonged illness. Earlier, in October 1984, MGR was diagnosed with kidney failure, which was further complicated by diabetes, a mild heart attack and a massive stroke. He  served as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for ten years between 1977 and 1987 and had been  regarded as one of the most influential actors of the Tamil film industry.

    On July 29,  Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Sri Lankan President Jayewardene sign the historic Indo-Sri Lanka accord in Colombo .1987 saw the relations between Sri Lanka and India plummeting to a lowest ever after New Delhi's decision to airdrop supplies over Jaffna had opened up a diplomatic Pandora's Box. Later operation Pawan was launched to enforce the disarmament of the LTTE as a part of the Indo-Sri Lankan Accord. In brutal fighting that took about three weeks, the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) wrested control of the Jaffna Peninsula from LTTE rule. Rajiv Gandhi attacked & Hit by a Sri Lankan Soldier in 1987 at Colombo.
     

  • Ramaswamy Venkataraman becomes 8th  president of the India

     
    On July 16, Massive election victory won by securing more than 71 per cent of the votes.  India’s congress party nominee Ramaswamy Venkataraman won   to become the eighth president of the Indian republic. In a virtually straight contest, the incumbent vice-president from the south thrashed his nearest rival, the opposition’s V.R. Krishna Iyer, by more than 450,000 votes. 

  • Sunil Gavaskar becomes first ever cricketer to score 10,000 runs

    ON March 7, a quick single nudged through the slips to a Pakistani bowler named Ejaz Fakih took Gavaskar to the milestone. Non-striker Kiran More says Gavaskar celebrated that moment like he usually didn’t do in cricket i.e . he Sprinted.

    In the same year, India's Chetan Sharma became the first bowler in World Cup history to take a hat-trick. The venue was Nagpur, for the 24th match of the Reliance World Cup, where India faced New Zealand.
