Gujarat University introduces diploma, degree and certificate courses on heritage and tourism

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and Gujarat University (GU) has introduced diploma, degree and certificate courses on heritage and tourism

The university announced the launch of nine courses, including certificate courses of three months, six months and nine months besides a three-year degree course on Tourism Guide and Historian. Other courses include architectural photography and digital display, accommodation and transportation, heritage protection by law, communication skills and interactive sciences, to mention a few.

Mayor Gautam Shah and GU Vice Chancellor Himanshu Pandya said the varsity will provide academic support to the AMC in its bid to promote tourism in the city now that Ahmedabad has become the first heritage city of India.

Pandya said the varsity will give course completion certificate and participants will get an endorsement from the civic body. When asked about the availability of faculty members for teaching specialised courses, Pandya said GU will collaborate with other universities to start the courses. Shah said with the state government allocating special funds for conservation and promotion of Ahmedabad as India’s first Heritage City, the civic body will expand its heritage cell as well as focus on tourism in the city. “Expansion of AMC’s heritage cell will create several employment opportunities in various categories including tourist guides and interpreters,” the Mayor said.

? Cultural, Religious and Archeological Heritage
? Ancient History of Ahmedabad (web designing)
? Heritage Protection by law

Gujarat University will also allow its students to study a semester in another state, national and overseas varsities in Japan, China and Canada. Simultaneously students from universities abroad and in other states will be able to study a semester or two in GU.

The programme will be implemented from this academic year. V-C Himanshu Pandya said about 80% of the courses are drafted as per UGC norms. So, granting credits to students of Indian varsities won’t be an issue. Whereas uniformity in academics will allow exchange program with foreign universities.
