Summary:

Common Law Admission Test, CLAT is a national level examination test taken to offer admissions to the candidates planning to get admission in law courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Till now, the exam is held in the English language only. The Delhi Court has asked the BCI to answer the petition filed, to conduct the CLAT 2020, in local languages.

Till now, the exam is held in the English language only. The Delhi Court has asked the BCI to answer the petition filed, to conduct the CLAT 2020, in local languages.

The petition was filed by 2 students Pratham Kaushik and Neeta Rai, seeking holding of CLAT in regional languages for students who have completed their school education in Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil or other languages.

Justice Najmi Waziri directed BCI to take up a call and inform the petitioners. Read on to know more about the exam, the tentative dates, facts and information.

  1. Both UG and PG law courses are offered at 21 NLUs and other colleges/ universities that accept CLAT scores.
  2. More than 50,000 test-takers appear for this exam.
  3. Till 2018, the test was taken by NLUs on a rotational basis.
  4. However, from 2019 onwards, it was decided that this test will be taken by The Consortium of NLUs, a permanent body formed by the universities.

CLAT is taken to offer a list of candidates based on the ‘merit-cum-preference’ to each University for admission offering UG/PG law courses. Based on the candidates’ performance, their eligibility, reservation and other criteria set by the institutes, they are offered admission in various law colleges and universities in India. This exam is the gateway for admission to the topmost law colleges in India.

The registration process for the exam is open since January 1, 2020, and will conclude on July 1, 2020. The exam date will be announced 21 days prior to the examination.

CLAT 2020 Eligibility Criteria – For Undergraduate Law Courses
The eligibility criterion of CLAT test is different for the students applying for undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The eligibility criterion for a 5-year law course is discussed below:

  1. Qualifying exam- The candidates who have cleared their Senior Secondary School Examination/ 12th Board Examination are eligible to apply for the test.
  2. Marks in qualifying exam: The candidates must have secured at least 45% marks in the qualifying degree so that they can apply for it. However, the students belonging to SC and ST category need can apply even with 40% marks as well.
  3. Age limit- There no age limit for the candidates planning to apply for UG program.

CLAT 2020 Eligibility Criteria for Postgraduate Law Courses

  1. Qualifying exam – The candidates planning to apply for admission to the LLM program must have a recognized bachelor’s degree in law or any equivalent exam.
  2. Marks in qualifying marks- The aspirants must have achieved at least 55% in the qualifying degree. The SC/ST category aspirants will need 45% relaxation in minimum marks.
  3. Age limit- Similar to the undergraduate course, there is no age limit for the candidates giving the exam for PG program as well.

The candidate planning to appear for this exam after graduation, they need to give CLAT PG exam and not CLAT UG exam.

CLAT 2020 Syllabus

The exam is taken offline; the exam will have 150 questions and 100 questions for UG and PG courses. The questions will involve five different subjects including English, General Knowledge & Current Affairs, Elementary Mathematics (Numerical Ability), Legal Aptitude and Logical Reasoning. The style of questions asked in different subjects is mentioned below.

English Language- Through this section, the candidates’ proficiency in English will be evaluated. The passage will test through which the candidates’ understanding of the text will be judged. The way they have understood the words used in the passage, and how effectively they have presented their thoughts play an important role in getting a good score in the test.

Current Affairs - This section will include passages instead of direct questions that were a part of the test previously. The questions from the passages will be asked in the test. The CLAT aspirants can read the newspapers daily, specifically articles that include any bill or judgments or legal information, as they play an essential role in preparing for this section.

Quantitative Aptitude- The quantitative part or Maths section includes short sets of facts or propositions, graphs, or other textual, pictorial or diagrammatic representations of numerical information, which are followed by a series of questions. The aspirants are accepted to understand the data from the given passage and answer them accordingly.

Legal Reasoning- This section is included in the CLAT to judge the test-takers interest and understanding towards studying law, research aptitude and their problem-solving skills. The questions asked in this section would be related to the facts or scenarios involving legal matters. The passage in the legal reasoning section will include specific rules and principles that should be identified and accordingly applied to the questions.

Logical Reasoning- The agenda of including this section in the CLAT is to check the candidate`s ability to identify different patterns, valid links and rectify illogical arguments. The questions included in this section will be based on the passage.

CLAT 2020 Preparation Tips
To help the aspirants in understanding the preparation strategy for the CLAT, we have listed some of the critical points that require to be followed while preparing for the 2020 exam:

  1. The candidates must be aware of the latest Exam Pattern and Syllabus.
  2. They can take more Mock Tests and considering doing more Sample Papers so that they can to get a good score in the Exam.
  3. Study hard and study smart.
  4. Focus on a regular revision.
  5. The candidates must study from the best books suggested for the Exam.

CLAT Eligibility Criteria 2020 – Key Points

  1. No age limit to appear in CLAT 2020, it applies to all the UG and PG courses.
  2. Candidate of any age is allowed to give the test. Admissions will be granted based on the candidates’ performance in UG or PG program.
  3. The candidate clearing the test with qualifying percentage will be granted admission, for PG aspirants, a valid bachelor`s degree in law is mandatory.
  4. Candidates giving the qualifying exam in March/April (UG program) or April/May (PG program) are also eligible to apply for this test.
  5. SC and ST candidates are given 5 - 10 % relaxation in minimum marks in the qualifying exam.
  6. CLAT PG or CLAT UG is taken to offer admission to LLM programs offered by the NLUs.
