Google Doodle today is commemorating English engineer Hubert Cecil Booth, the man who invented vacuum cleaner, on his 147th birthday. The animated doodle honours the inventor for his remarkable inventions like a vacuum cleaner and the ferris wheel.

Hubert Cecil Booth was born in Gloucester, England in 1871. Completing his education at Gloucester College and Gloucester Country School, after qualifying the entrance examination, he made his way to the Central Technical College in London.

Mr Booth completed his three-year course in civil engineering and mechanical engineering. Later he joined Maudslay Sons & Field, Lambeth, London for the position of civil engineer. There he designed bridges and engines for battleships. His another memorable invention was the very famous, large Ferris wheels for amusement parks in London, Paris and Vienna.

Apart from this Booth is recognized for giving shape to the first powered vacuum cleaner. Before his invention, the cleaners had to blow the dirt away. But his cleaner sucked the dirt, which proved a more efficient way of cleaning.

It is said that Hubert Cecil Booth was inspired to invent the vacuum cleaner after watching a demonstration of an American device.

A Google release read "After seeing a demonstration of the "pneumatic carpet renovator" blowing dirt out of railway cars, Booth tried an experiment. Laying his handkerchief on a restaurant chair, he put his mouth on the tablecloth and sucked air through it. Inspired by the results he set to work on his first design-nicknamed "Puffing Billy"-which was powered by an engine so big it had to be pulled around by horses and parked outside the house to be cleaned".
