The Union Cabinet lately approved the implementation of `Prime Minister`s Research Fellows (PMRF)` scheme.
Commenting on the same, Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said that the Prime Minister Research Fellowship scheme for 1,000 B.Tech students for pursuing PhD courses at IITs and IISc will help to convert brain drain into brain gain.
According to the reports, the Union Cabinet approved the scheme at a cost of Rs 1,650 crore for a period of seven years, beginning in 2018-19.
Javadekar said, "The scheme will go a long way in tapping the talent pool of the country for carrying out research indigenously in cutting-edge science and technology domains".
The minister further added, "Research under the scheme will address our national priorities on the one hand and the shortage of quality faculty in premier educational institutions of the country on the other".

Under the scheme, students who have completed or are in final year of BTech or integrated MTech or MSc in science and technology streams at IISc, IITs, NITs, IISERs, IIITs will be given direct admissions in PhD programmes in IITs and IISc.
Candidate needs to have at least 8 CGPA. Also, students should have completed the required academic qualification in the last five years.
About Prime Minister`s Research Fellowship:
First two years: Rs. 70,000 a month
During the third year: Rs 75, 000 per month
Fourth and the fifth year: Rs 80,000 per month
A research grant of Rs 2 lakh each will also be given to the fellows for a period of five years to cover their foreign travel expenses for presenting research papers at international conferences and seminars.
Additionally, a maximum of 3,000 Fellows would be selected in a three year period, beginning 2018-19.
