Hyundai has begun testing the new version of its mid-size sedan for the international market

  • Next-gen Elantra is not to be confused with the facelift that debuted in 2018 and yet to arrive in India.

  • New Elantra will get an all-new design and look more like the 2020 Sonata.

  • It is likely be equipped with the same powertrains as the current car.

  • However, there are rumours of an all-electric variant too.

  • It is expected to debut near the end of 2019, with the global launch slated for next year.

  • Elantra facelift is expected to launch in India later this year with new 1.5-litre diesel engine.

While the Hyundai Elantra facelift that debuted in 2018 is expected to arrive in India soon, the next-gen Elantra has already been spied elsewhere. Although it covered in camouflage, the new Elantra is expected to look completely different and borrow design cues from the 2020 Sonata that debuted earlier this year.

The Elantra facelift, which is yet to come to India, already gets a distinct exterior styling when compared to the current model on offer here. However, that refreshed design doesn’t seem to have gone down well with global customers. Hence, the 2021 Elantra is expected to adopt the 2020 Sonata’s sportier aesthetics. There are no spy shots of the interior, but expect it to look similar to the Elantra facelift, albeit with more tech and features, including as a free-standing infotainment display.

The next-gen Elantra is likely to feature the same set of engines that are offered on the facelifted version, but there are rumours of an all-electric version as well. While Hyundai hasn’t revealed the launch plans for the new Elantra, we expect the carmaker to unveil the next-gen sedan near the end of 2019.

Meanwhile, we are still waiting for the launch of the Elantra facelift, which itself features a different exterior design when compared to the the version currently sold in India. It is expected to be powered by the same 2.0-litre petrol motor, albeit with updates to meet BS6 norms. Meanwhile, it will ditch the current 1.6-litre diesel for the all-new 1.5-litre diesel that is set to make its debut with Kia Seltos.

The Hyundai Elantra facelift is expected to be priced at a slight premium over the current car due to its updated engines and features. We expect Hyundai to price it between Rs 14 lakh to Rs 21 lakh (ex-showroom). Once launched, it will compete with the likes of the Toyota Corolla Altis, Skoda Octavia and new Honda Civic. Meanwhile, the next-gen Octavia is expected to arrive in India in a couple of years. Head here for more details regarding the Skoda sedan.
